PS3 Entertainment Center

I have been a die hard pc game fan for a long time. I have tried different console systems, and liked them for certain things, such as, fighting games like Mortal Combat, or Virtua Fighter, Driving games like Need for Speed, and even the sports games like football.
I was never really into the console games as I am the PC titles, and I still feel that PC first person shooters are far better than the consoles, but with Sony's new playstation 3, it is a combination of things that make this console a must have for any gamer.
I purchased the Sony PS3 80gig version. The console itself offers the best graphics available, for a console. Has a wide variety of options like bluetooth, wifi, Ethernet, card reader, usb support, HDMI 1080p resolution, and a blueray player, that not only reads the latest’s and greatest quality movies, but also works with cd's, dvd's and DVD - and + r/rw. That’s right; you can burn your own movies onto a DVD-r and use the ps3 for playback. It also has the ability to rip your cd collection onto the internal HDD, and play back the AAC audio later. With the wifi capability, you don't need to run any wires to your living room to update the console, or to download new content. The Sony store offers game demos, and full games for download, as well as, video trailers. The built in browser lets you surf the web, and although limited on certain options, because it is not a windows based system, you can still visit your favorite website, view your mail, etc... But, you can't play Windows Media Files. (Only certain file types are supported) You can save photos from the internet and use them as wallpapers, and really personalize your console.
Recently, I hooked the console up to a nice big High Definition TV, and experienced the blueray video, and game quality, it is absolutely awesome. Grand Tourismo, while not a great demo, has the most amazing graphics. They are as close to real as I have seen in any game. The video trailers I checked out were also beautiful, and you can see such great detail... There are a couple of different versions of the PS3 out. The 40gig version doesn't support ps2 compatibility, and doesn't have a flash card reader. The console is more than a gaming console; it is a multimedia entertainment center, and well worth the money.
HD-DVD has been dropped by many of the stores and rental places, and although the HD-DVD players and discs are still out there, they will gradually fade away. That is just one more selling point for the PS3, and Blueray. Most Blueray players are $300 and up. The PS3 starts at $399, and goes up to $499. If you are thinking of upgrading to blueray,
A high definition movie player, or HD TV, you should consider the PS3.
Some of the games I have tried and liked are, Madden 08, FIFA Street, NFL Street, Burnout Paradise, Rub a Dub, Virtua-Fighter, and MotorStorm.

Having been an XBox 360 addict for the last couple of years, I feel obliged to point out the coolness of the XBox 360 compared to PS3.

For starters (and this is still the killer), games! In a gaming console, this should all be about games and the XBox 360 still beats the PS3 hands down...just look at the Holiday line up and you'll have to agree how squashed the PS3 was (Halo 3, Mass Effect anyone ?)...

The XBox 360 is also an excellent multimedia entertainment center. It does support Ethernet, HDMI 1080p (latest models). Supports wifi via accessory, does not support Bluetooth...Not that I care too much about these last two...I prefer my wired fast connection for gaming and do not use BlueTooth at all. I can hookup any USB media to access my photos or movies. I can even connect to any PC running Media Center on my home
network to stream from there...how cool is that ?

So far the XBox 360 has supported HD-DVD via an external drive but with the upcoming demise of HD-DVD (see wired post), rumours are pointing to a possible BluRay external player for it (see engadget post). Tempting... that will surely blow away my biggest reason for thinking of getting a PS3...On top of that I probably do not need a BluRay player anyway since I can get HD content (movies, TV series, not just trailers ;-) ) via XBox Marketplace...and then there's achievements (see previous post) don't even get me started...

XBox 360 "has taken the lead" (and still has it) I would say! ;-)

Strangely, I'm most curious about the Rub a Dub game! :)

Well, it's not so strange: I'm just curious about anything with an accelerometer in it (PS3 sixaxis, in this case) because I have only had very limited access to that kind of fun.

Bluetooth technology in the controllers offer a great deal of control from a very long range, upto 33 feet away I believe. The controllers are also 6 axis, so some games use the motion from the user. The bowling and rub a dub games are great for that... The PS3 also streams music, and video from your pc as well as pictures. It also has the option of being controlled by the PSP (in remote play) and shortly the Iphone will also be able to be used as a remote. The PSP can also be used to upload files to the PS3 as well as store music from the PS3 to go with you when you take your PSP with you away from home.
